Marshall County Schools held a banquet Monday to honor participants in the county’s work study program for students with special needs.

The work study program is unique in many ways. It allows students with disabilities to participate in a special work setting. The county partners with local businesses throughout the local community helping to teach the students the skills and knowledge needed to develop proper work ethic to become productive members of society. Participants learn how to communicate with customers while focusing on life skills such as managing money and how to balance a check book, the things that are needed to become successful adults. The students are recognized based on their hard work and dedication to working their jobs as well as maintaining their schoolwork throughout the school year.

John Marshall High School students work at Catholic Charities in Wheeling, Ruttenbucks, Guest House, Grand Vue, Anytime Fitness, Quality Bakery, Marshall County Animal Shelter and Ace Hardware. Students from Cameron High School work at Cameron City Hall weekly and work at Catholic Charities as well.

The program is great, and the student workers are awesome. The organizers of the work study program are always looking to gain new work sites as the program is expanding and students show great interest in helping in the community. There were 35 students in the program this year.
