SENIOR PARENT INFORMATION

The senior year is a busy time and, although students are encouraged to take the initiative and responsibility to prepare for their transition to

the post high school world, parents/guardians play a significant role and need to be involved in the process.

Here are a few things that you will need to be aware of as the year progresses.

Communication is important, and there are several ways for you to keep informed.  There is a Counselors’Corner  link on Edline that has a calendar of counseling events, scholarship lists,  and a lot of good information for seniors.  The monthly newsletter that goes home with each high school student the first week of the month also has information in it that will be helpful to parents/guardians of seniors.  So if your child does not bring it to you, please ask him or her for it.  (Please do the same with report cards-they go home at the end of each nine weeks.)  There will also be Parent Link phone calls that go out when a workshop or parent meeting is coming up.  In addition, please remind your child to listen to morning announcements each day.

It is important for you to get a good understanding of the types of programs and schools available for your child, and the process involved in getting there.  So you are invited, and highly encouraged, to join us for our Cameron Mini-College Fair for Parents that will be held in September in the cafeteria.  There will be representatives from:  a community college, a public 4 year college, a private 4 year college, a technical school, a branch of the military, WV Rehabilitation Services, and the workforce. They will talk to you about the process and requirements for admission to each of these types of programs.

Visitation  College and Program Representatives from various schools and programs will be visiting Cameron HS to talk with seniors throughout the fall.  Your child should sign up to meet with representatives from schools that they may be interested in.  Then they should follow up by arranging a visit to the schools that seem like the best fit for them.   If possible, you should go with them for the visit.  We will be sponsoring a few limited trips to colleges this fall which will include: WVU, WV Northern CC, and Belmont Technical College.

ACT and SAT    Students planning to attend a 4 year college must take the ACT or SAT for admission.  Students planning to attend a community or technical college are encouraged to take the ACT or SAT, although community colleges also offer their own placement tests which are administered at their individual campuses.  Test costs are as follows:  ACT- $33, ACT with writing- $48, SAT-$47. If your child receives free or reduced lunch, or if you meet other federal eligibility rules, your child may get a test fee waiver.  See me for me details if you think your child is eligible.  Remember, students must register for these tests 4-6 weeks before the test is given, and deadlines are not flexible.  They may register online or with paper application.
